Halkidiki on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Yes, with a car shared between two or more people: a realistic minimum is about €80 per person per day in high season (bed €35, food €20, sights €10, transport €15). Off-peak months and rooms with kitchens bring it lower.
A realistic daily budget
| Budget | Mid-range | Comfort | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed (per person, sharing) | €35 | €70 | €200 |
| Food & drink | €20 | €35 | €70 |
| Sights & tickets | €10 | €30 | €60 |
| Local transport | €15 | €25 | €45 |
| Per person, per day | €80 | €160 | €375 |

Free things to do
- The stone village of Afytos (Athytos) and its view across the gulf to Sithonia
- Kavourotrypes (Orange Beach) coves between white rocks and pines
- Karydi beach near Vourvourou
- Sunset at Porto Koufo, the largest natural harbour in Greece
- The Byzantine tower on the Ouranoupoli waterfront (exterior)
- Quiet west-coast Sithonia beaches such as Lagomandra and Spathies
Cheap eats
- Gyros pita, about €3.50–5
- Bougatsa or spinach pie from a village bakery, about €2–4
- Greek salad and a shared meze in a village taverna, about €8–11 per dish
- Souvlaki skewers at a grill house, a few euros each
- Fresh fish by the kilo in Porto Koufo shared between several people, cheaper than individual mains
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers rent rooms and apartments in Nikiti and Neos Marmaras (about €60–100 a double, so roughly €30–50 each when sharing), which give access to both coasts of Sithonia. Campsites along Sithonia and Kassandra are cheaper still in summer.
Getting around cheaply
A shared rental car from Thessaloniki airport is the most practical and, split between several people, the cheapest way to see the peninsulas. KTEL buses connect villages with Thessaloniki but not the remote coves.
A sample budget day
- Morning: Drive to Vourvourou and swim at Karydi (free)
- Lunch: Gyros pita and a freddo espresso, about €8
- Afternoon: Kavourotrypes coves on the way south (free)
- Evening: Sunset at Porto Koufo and a taverna dinner, about €15–20 per person
- Total: about €80 including a shared room and a shared car
More ways to save
- Travel in June or September and book apartments directly with owners.
- Bring snorkel gear; Sithonia's rocky coves have very clear water.
- Fill up the tank in Nikiti or Neos Marmaras before driving around southern Sithonia.
- Pack a cool box and picnic on beaches without facilities.
- Pick one base on Sithonia rather than changing hotels to save on transfer days.
- Choose the Athos coastal cruise rather than private boats to see the monasteries cheaply.

Where is the cheapest place to stay?
Nikiti and Neos Marmaras for rooms and apartments, or campsites on Sithonia.
