Bangladesh on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Yes, Bangladesh is very cheap on the ground: allow about ৳3,500 per person per day for a basic room, local food, sights and transport. The main extra is the Sundarbans trip, which costs about ৳12,000-25,000 for two days and one night.

Free things to do
- Walk the outside and lakeside of the National Parliament House by Louis Kahn.
- Explore the lanes of Shankhari Bazar, the Hindu conch-shell carvers' street in Old Dhaka.
- Watch the ferries and river life at Sadarghat from the shore.
- Walk around Dhanmondi Lake in the evening, when families come out for street snacks.
- Walk between the tea rows of the estates around Srimangal.
- Wander Panam Nagar's street of 19th-century merchant mansions in Sonargaon (check for any small entry fee).
Cheap eats
- Kacchi biryani in Old Dhaka (Nanna Biryani, Haji Biryani): ৳250-400 a plate.
- Fuchka and chotpoti street snacks around Dhanmondi Lake: a few dozen taka a plate.
- Seven-layer tea at Nilkantha Tea Cabin in Srimangal: about ৳70-100.
- Fish curry, rice and dal at a guesthouse or local restaurant: often ৳200-400.
- Bhuna khichuri or beef kala bhuna in Dhanmondi: ৳600-1,200 for a full meal in a sit-down restaurant.
Where to sleep for less
The cheapest hotels in Dhaka are around Paltan and Motijheel, near Kamalapur station and the metro, at about ৳2,500-4,500 for a basic double. Srimangal has guesthouses and eco-resorts among the tea gardens from about ৳5,000 with meals. Hostels are rare, so budget travellers usually share a simple hotel room.
Getting around cheaply
Use the MRT Line 6 metro and Pathao or Uber in Dhaka, and cycle rickshaws for short hops. From Hazrat Shahjalal Airport, an Uber or Pathao car is the simplest door-to-door option to Gulshan or Banani, about 20-30 minutes away; check the fare in the app. Between cities, intercity trains (book on the Bangladesh Railway app) and AC coaches across the Padma Bridge (about ৳900-1,500 to Khulna) are cheap.
A sample budget day
- Morning: Lalbagh Fort (about ৳500 for foreigners), then a cycle rickshaw to Shankhari Bazar.
- Lunch: kacchi biryani in Old Dhaka (about ৳300).
- Afternoon: Ahsan Manzil (about ৳500) and a 30-minute boat at Sadarghat (৳200-400).
- Evening: metro back and fuchka at Dhanmondi Lake (about ৳200), plus a basic room in Paltan.
- Total: about ৳3,500
More ways to save
- Travel on Friday mornings, the weekly holiday, when Dhaka's roads are emptiest.
- Plan one area of Dhaka per half-day so you are not paying for long CNG rides through traffic.
- Fly domestic only when time matters: trains and AC coaches are far cheaper than Biman, US-Bangla or Novoair (about ৳5,000-9,000).
- Book the Sundarbans trip before leaving Dhaka and ask what is included; all-inclusive group launches avoid surprise costs.
- Carry small notes for rickshaws, tea and snacks; change for large notes is often short.
- Avoid travelling around Eid, when bus and train fares rise and seats sell out.
