Short answer
December to March is the best time, with highs of about 20–22°C, long evenings and all walks open, but it is also the busiest and most expensive season. April brings calm autumn days, with highs around 18°C, and the golden fagus in the highlands in late April and May. Winter is cold, with highs of about 12–13°C and snow on the mountains, but quiet and cheaper.

When to avoid
Avoid the Christmas–January peak if you want lower prices and easier parking at Wineglass Bay and Cradle Mountain. In June to August, short days, cold and snow limit hiking and some high roads.
