Common questions
Is Rovaniemi or Tromso cheaper?
They are close. Our mid-range estimate is about €300 per person per day in Rovaniemi against about €319 in Tromso. In both, guided tours such as husky rides, northern lights chases and whale watching are the biggest cost, often more than the hotel. Alcohol is notably more expensive in Norway.
Where is it colder?
Rovaniemi, usually. It is inland, while Tromso sits on the coast and is milder for its latitude. Our sheet gives around -6°C for January in Rovaniemi and around -4°C for December in Tromso, though both can get much colder. Rovaniemi also tends to have more reliable snow on the ground.
Which is better for the northern lights?
Both sit in the auroral zone, and you can see the lights from either on a clear, dark night from roughly September to March. Rovaniemi's inland climate often gives clearer skies; Tromso's coast is cloudier, but tours drive far, even into Finland, to find gaps. Plan several nights, not one.
How do I get between Rovaniemi and Tromso?
There is no train. By car it is about 7 to 8 hours via northern Finland and Kilpisjärvi, beautiful but demanding in winter. Flights usually need a change in Helsinki or Oslo and can take most of a day. Some winter bus links have run in the past. Check current timetables and road conditions.
