Rhodes or Thessaloniki? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Rhodes for a beach holiday with history attached: a lived-in medieval Old Town, Lindos and warm sea from May to October. Pick Thessaloniki for a city break built around food, bars and Byzantine monuments, at a lower daily cost (about €126 mid-range against €170 on Rhodes).
Rhodes: suits couples and families who want beaches, the medieval Old Town and Lindos in one trip.
Thessaloniki: suits friends and solo travellers who want a real Greek city, long meals and late nights.

Common questions
Is Rhodes or Thessaloniki cheaper?
Thessaloniki, clearly. Our mid-range estimate is about €126 per person per day there against about €170 on Rhodes. Island hotels in July and August push Rhodes costs higher, while Thessaloniki keeps city prices all year and has cheap bougatsa, koulouri and meze. Visiting Rhodes in May or October narrows the gap noticeably.
Can I swim in Thessaloniki?
Not really in the city itself; the bay is not where locals swim. The beaches are on Halkidiki, roughly an hour or more by car or bus to the nearest good ones on Kassandra. If swimming every day matters to you, Rhodes is the better choice, with beaches minutes from Rhodes Town and along the east coast to Lindos.
When is the best time to go?
For Rhodes, April to May and October are ideal: warm sea by late May, fewer crowds and lower prices. July can reach about 37°C. Thessaloniki works best in spring and autumn too, April and September to November, with July around 33°C. Thessaloniki stays lively in winter because it is a student city, while Rhodes is much quieter then.
How do I get between Rhodes and Thessaloniki?
Fly. Direct flights take about 1 h 10 and run more often in summer; in the low season you may need to connect through Athens. A ferry exists only occasionally and takes many hours, so it is not practical for a short trip. Check current timetables before planning a combined itinerary.
