Queenstown's accommodation is among the most expensive in New Zealand, and adventure activities such as bungee or jet boats cost a lot. Rotorua has cheaper motels, and some geothermal areas can be seen for free.

How do I get from Queenstown to Rotorua?

They are on different islands, about 1,000 km apart, so you fly. The usual route is Queenstown to Auckland, about 1 h 50, then a roughly 3-hour drive or bus to Rotorua. Rotorua airport has limited connections, sometimes via Wellington or Christchurch. Check current schedules.

Which is better with children?

Rotorua. Geysers, bubbling mud pools, hot pools, forest walks and Māori cultural evenings work for all ages, and costs are lower. Queenstown has the gondola, luge and lake activities, but many of its headline adventures, such as bungee and skydiving, have age or weight limits.

When is the best time to visit?
