Common questions
Is Paris or Rome cheaper?
Rome. Our mid-range estimate is about €172 per person per day against about €215 in Paris. Hotels and restaurant meals are generally less expensive in Rome, and a slice of pizza or supplì costs little. Both cities have a tourist tax added to hotel bills, and both get expensive near the main sights, so eat a few streets away.
Which is better for a first trip to Europe?
Both are classic choices. Paris is easier to navigate thanks to its metro, and its sights line up along the Seine. Rome packs more visible history into a small area, with ruins on ordinary street corners. If art museums and elegance appeal most, choose Paris; if ancient history and food appeal most, choose Rome.
When is the best time to visit?
For Rome, September and October are ideal, warm but not scorching; July often reaches about 34°C. Paris is pleasant from late spring to early autumn, peaking around 25°C. Winter is mild in Rome, around 12°C, but cold and grey in Paris, around 7°C. Avoid August if you dislike crowds and some closed local restaurants.
How do I get from Paris to Rome?
Fly. Flights take about 2 hours and many airlines serve the route, landing at Fiumicino or Ciampino. The train is scenic but takes most of a day, usually with a change in Milan or Turin, so it suits slow travellers only. Check current timetables, as cross-border train services change.
