Nafplio or Thessaloniki? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Thessaloniki for a real city break: Byzantine churches, markets, a long seafront, the best bougatsa in Greece and nightlife every night of the week — and it is cheaper, about €126 a day mid-range against €155 in Nafplio. Pick Nafplio for a small, romantic seaside town with a fortress, swimming nearby and Mycenae and Epidaurus close by. Nafplio is a two-hour drive from Athens; Thessaloniki is the north's own hub.
Nafplio: suits couples and families who want a slow, walkable town by the sea with ancient sites for day trips.
Thessaloniki: suits solo travellers and friends who want food, bars, Byzantine history and a city that lives late.

Common questions
Is Nafplio or Thessaloniki cheaper?
Thessaloniki, clearly. Our mid-range estimate is about €126 per person per day in Thessaloniki against €155 in Nafplio. As a large university city, Thessaloniki has many affordable restaurants, bakeries and bars, and hotels are good value outside big trade fairs. Nafplio's small hotels get expensive on holiday weekends, when Athenians fill the town.
How far is Nafplio from Thessaloniki?
They are at opposite ends of mainland Greece, roughly 340 km in a straight line and around 600 km by road. Driving takes about 6 hours via Athens. By public transport, take the train or a flight between Thessaloniki and Athens, then a KTEL bus of about 2 to 2 h 30 to Nafplio. Check current timetables, as rail times have changed in recent years.
Can you swim in Thessaloniki?
Not in the city: the bay in front of the seafront is not used for swimming. The nearest good beaches are in Halkidiki, about an hour or more by car, or at Perea and Agia Triada on the city's outskirts. Nafplio has Arvanitia beach a short walk from the old town and Karathona a few kilometres away.
Which is better for a weekend?
Both work well, but for different weekends. Nafplio is the classic romantic escape from Athens, with seafront walks, fortresses and long lunches. Thessaloniki is the better choice for food, bars and city life, and is easy to reach from many European airports. If you love eating out, choose Thessaloniki.
