Doing both in one trip
5 days: 3 in Nafplio + 2 in Olympia
Coming from Athens, Nafplio is closer (about 2 hours by car), so start there and continue west to Olympia; from Olympia you can drive back to Athens or on to Patras.
Getting between them: By car about 2 h 45 to 3 h (roughly 200–220 km) via the motorway through Tripoli. There is no direct bus; public transport needs changes, so check current KTEL timetables. A hire car is by far the easiest option. Distance about 104 km as the crow flies. Check current timetables.
- Day 1: Nafplio Old Town, Syntagma Square, Akti Miaouli and Arvanitia walk.
- Day 2: Palamidi in the morning, Mycenae in the afternoon.
- Day 3: Epidaurus theatre, beach at Tolo or Karathona.

Is Nafplio or Olympia cheaper?
Olympia. Our mid-range estimate is about €125 per person per day there against €155 in Nafplio. Olympia is a small village where rooms and taverna meals cost less. Nafplio is a popular weekend destination from Athens, so hotel prices in the Old Town rise on Fridays and Saturdays and during holidays.
How do I get from Nafplio to Olympia?
By car it takes about 2 h 45 to 3 hours on the motorway via Tripoli, roughly 200 to 220 km. There is no direct bus, and connections by KTEL bus require changes and take most of a day, so check current timetables if you are not driving. Most visitors combining the two hire a car.
How long do I need in Olympia?
One full day, ideally with a night in the village. Arrive the afternoon before to see the Archaeological Museum, then visit the site early the next morning before the heat and the tour groups. The site and museum together take about four to five hours at a relaxed pace.
When is the best time to visit?
Our data puts April, May and September to November as best for Nafplio, and May, September and October for Olympia. May and late September suit both. July is very hot in both, around 35 to 36°C, which makes visiting open ancient sites at midday hard. Winters are mild, about 14°C.
