Common questions
Is Miami or New York cheaper?
New York, slightly, by our mid-range estimate: about €281 per person per day against €304 in Miami. New York hotels are expensive, but you save on transport by walking and using the subway. In Miami, beachfront hotels, resort fees, parking and rideshares push the total up. Prices in both rise in the peak seasons, winter for Miami and the holidays for New York.
Which is better in winter?
Miami, if you want to be outdoors. January highs are around 24°C and the sea is swimmable for many people. New York averages about 5°C in January, with occasional snow, though its museums, theatres and restaurants work in any weather, and December brings holiday lights and markets. Winter is Miami's high season, so book hotels early.
Do I need a car in Miami?
It helps. Miami Beach is walkable and has local buses, and the free Metromover loops around Downtown, but Wynwood, Little Havana, Coral Gables and the Everglades are spread out. Many visitors rely on rideshares for short stays. If you plan an Everglades trip or a drive to the Keys, rent a car for those days.
Which is better for a first visit to the US?
New York, for most people. In four or five days you can see a lot without a car, and the city shows the country's history, culture and diversity in one place. Miami works better as a beach and nightlife holiday. If you have a week, fly between them; the flight is about three hours.
