Lyon or Paris? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Paris for a first trip to France: the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Versailles and the sheer number of things to see are hard to replace. Pick Lyon if you have done Paris, care most about eating well, and want a calmer, cheaper city — about €183 a day mid-range against €215 in Paris. They are two hours apart by TGV, so doing both is easy.
Lyon: suits food-focused couples and repeat visitors to France who want traditional bouchons, markets and a walkable old town without Paris-level crowds.
Paris: suits first-timers, honeymooners and older travellers who want the great museums, landmark architecture and café life in one place.

Common questions
Is Lyon or Paris cheaper?
Lyon is cheaper. Our mid-range estimate is about €183 per person per day in Lyon against €215 in Paris, and most of the difference is hotels. Food is also better value in Lyon: a multi-course lunch menu in a bouchon often costs what a single main course does near the Paris landmarks. Transport is cheap in both, since you can walk a lot and use the metro.
How long does it take to get from Paris to Lyon?
About 2 hours on the TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon to Lyon Part-Dieu, with departures through the day. Low-cost high-speed trains also run on the route, sometimes from other Paris stations, so check which station your ticket uses. Driving is roughly 465 km and about 4 h 30 without traffic, plus motorway tolls.
Is Lyon worth visiting if I have been to Paris?
Yes, especially if you travel for food. Lyon has a UNESCO-listed old town, Roman theatres on Fourvière hill, covered passageways called traboules and some of France's most traditional cooking. It feels like a working city rather than a showcase, and two or three days cover the centre. It is also a good base for Beaujolais and the Alps.
Which is better for a first trip to France?
Paris. The concentration of museums, monuments and neighbourhoods is unmatched, and most international flights arrive there. Lyon makes more sense as a second stop or on a second visit. With a week, give Paris four days and Lyon three; the TGV between them takes about two hours, so you lose very little time.
