Common questions
Is Kota Kinabalu or Langkawi cheaper?
They are almost the same. Our mid-range estimate is about €102 per person per day in Kota Kinabalu against about €100 in Langkawi. Langkawi is a duty-free island, so alcohol and some goods cost less. In Kota Kinabalu, the biggest extra costs are a Mount Kinabalu climb and wildlife tours.
When is the best time to visit?
Both are warm all year, around 28 to 32°C. Langkawi is usually driest from about December to March. Kota Kinabalu has rain spread across the year, with heavier rains often late in the year. Sea conditions can affect boat trips in both, so keep a spare day.
Can I climb Mount Kinabalu without planning?
No. The summit climb is normally done over two days with a licensed guide and an overnight stay on the mountain, and climbing permits and mountain huts are limited. Book well ahead, especially in peak months. If you cannot get a permit, Kinabalu Park's lower trails are still worth a visit.
How do I get between Kota Kinabalu and Langkawi?
Fly. They are about 1,800 km apart on different sides of the South China Sea, and most routes change in Kuala Lumpur: about 2 h 30 from Kota Kinabalu to KL, then about 1 hour to Langkawi. Allow most of a day. Check current timetables for any direct flights.
