Common questions
Is Kochi or Mumbai cheaper?
Kochi, clearly. Our mid-range estimate is about 6,300 rupees per person per day in Kochi against about 9,300 in Mumbai. Mumbai hotels are among the most expensive in India, especially in South Mumbai. Street food is cheap in both, and Kerala meals on a banana leaf cost very little.
When is the best time to visit?
Roughly November to February for both, when it is dry and less humid. Mumbai's best month in our data is January. Both are hot before the monsoon, about 31 to 34°C in March. The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain from about June to September, when Mumbai can flood.
Which is better for a first trip to India?
Kochi is gentler. Fort Kochi is small, walkable and relaxed, and Kerala is easy to travel around. Mumbai is exciting but overwhelming for some first-timers, with crowds, noise and long distances. If you like big cities, starting in Mumbai and ending in Kochi works well.
How do I get between Kochi and Mumbai?
Fly. Direct flights take about 2 hours and run many times a day. Trains run along the Konkan coast and take around 20 hours or more, which is scenic but slow. Kochi airport is about an hour or more from Fort Kochi by road. Check current timetables.
