Kavala or Thessaloniki? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Thessaloniki for a proper city break: Byzantine and Roman monuments, the busiest food markets in northern Greece, and bars open late. Pick Kavala for a smaller harbour town with the Panagia old quarter, sandy beaches minutes away, ancient Philippi nearby and an easy ferry hop to Thasos; it suits families better. Costs are almost identical on our numbers: about €126 a day mid-range in Thessaloniki and €130 in Kavala.

Kavala: suits couples, families and friends who want a seaside town with beaches, fish tavernas, Philippi and a ferry to Thasos.

Thessaloniki: suits first-timers, friends and solo travellers who want a lively city of monuments, markets, food and nightlife.
