Istanbul or Marrakech? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Istanbul for a big, layered city of Byzantine and Ottoman monuments, Bosphorus ferries and some of the best street food in Europe, best in May–June or September–October. Pick Marrakech for a shorter, intense break of souks, riads and Atlas Mountains day trips from November to April, at a mid-range cost (about MAD 1,500 a day) slightly below Istanbul's €160.
Istanbul: suits couples, solo travellers and photographers who want world-class monuments, ferries, food and nightlife in a huge city.
Marrakech: suits couples and photographers who want a few intense days of souks, riads, gardens and mountain or desert trips.

They are about 3,400 km apart, so combining them only makes sense on a longer trip with a flight. Do Istanbul first in spring or autumn, then Marrakech while it is still mild; avoid Marrakech in July and August, when it reaches about 40°C.
Getting between them: Direct flight about 4 h 30 to 5 h plus airport time when it runs; otherwise connect via Casablanca or a European hub — check current schedules. Distance about 3,442 km as the crow flies. Check current timetables.

Common questions
Is Istanbul or Marrakech cheaper?
Marrakech is slightly cheaper on our mid-range numbers: about MAD 1,500 per person per day, a little below Istanbul's roughly €160 at recent exchange rates. Riads give good value for the experience, and street food is cheap in both. Istanbul's museum and palace tickets for foreign visitors have risen sharply in recent years, so budget for entry fees.
When should I visit each?
Istanbul's best months on our data are May, June, September and October; July reaches about 30°C and January about 10°C. Marrakech is best from November to April, when days are pleasant, and hits around 40°C in July. A trip combining both works best in April or from late October into November.
Which is easier for a first trip outside Western Europe?
Istanbul. It has good public transport, a familiar café and bar culture, and less pressure from touts. Marrakech is more intense: the medina's lanes are confusing, and shopkeepers and self-appointed guides can be persistent. Many first-timers love it anyway, and a riad with a helpful host and a guided first walk make the start much easier.
How long do I need in each?
Istanbul rewards five or six days: two for the old city, one for the Bosphorus and Karaköy, one for the Asian side, plus Balat or the Princes' Islands. Marrakech needs three or four: two for the medina, palaces and gardens, and one for an Atlas Mountains or Agafay desert day trip.
