Ho Chi Minh City or Hoi An? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Ho Chi Minh City for a fast, modern metropolis with late nights, war history and Mekong Delta trips. Pick Hoi An for a slow, walkable old town, cycling through rice fields, tailors and a beach close by; it is the better choice for families and couples, and cheaper on our numbers. If you can only fit one, Hoi An is the more relaxing stay, Saigon the more exciting one.

Common questions
Is Ho Chi Minh City or Hoi An cheaper?
Hoi An is cheaper on our numbers: about 1,900,000 VND per person per day at mid-range against about 2,150,000 VND in Ho Chi Minh City. Food is cheap in both, but Saigon's District 1 hotels and bars cost more. At the luxury end Hoi An's beach resorts can be pricier than city hotels, so the gap depends on where you sleep.
How do I get from Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An?
Fly to Da Nang, a flight of about 1 h 20 with many departures daily, then take a taxi or shuttle around 45 minutes to Hoi An. Hoi An has no airport or main-line station of its own. The train from Saigon to Da Nang takes most of a day and night, so it only suits travellers who want the slow journey.
When is the best time to visit both?
February to April is the safest window. Ho Chi Minh City is in its dry season, roughly December to April, though March is very hot, around the mid-thirties. Hoi An is dry and pleasant from February to April but gets heavy rain and possible flooding from roughly September to December. Avoid late autumn if Hoi An is the priority.
Which is better for a family holiday?
Hoi An. It is small, walkable and calm, with beaches, easy bike rides through rice fields, lantern-making and cooking classes children enjoy. Ho Chi Minh City is exciting but hot, sprawling and dominated by heavy motorbike traffic, which is hard with young children. If you do both, keep the Saigon part short and base the holiday in Hoi An.
