Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Hanoi for history, the Old Quarter, northern food and gateways to Ha Long Bay and Sapa; it is also cheaper on our numbers. Pick Ho Chi Minh City for a faster, more modern city with later nights, war history and easy trips to the Mekong Delta. Hanoi has more character for a first visit; Saigon has more energy.

Hanoi: suits solo travellers, friends and backpackers who want street food, temples and a base for Ha Long Bay and the northern mountains.

Ho Chi Minh City: suits first-timers, solo travellers and friends who want a modern, busy city, rooftop bars and Mekong Delta trips.

Common questions

Is Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City cheaper?

Hanoi is cheaper on our numbers: about 1,900,000 VND per person per day at mid-range against about 2,150,000 VND in Ho Chi Minh City. Both are inexpensive by European standards, especially for street food. Saigon's hotels, bars and restaurants in District 1 push costs up, while Hanoi's Old Quarter guesthouses and street stalls keep a mid-range day lower.

How do I travel between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City?

Fly. The flight takes about 2 h 10 and there are many departures a day, so fares are usually reasonable if booked a little ahead. The north–south railway exists and is scenic in parts, but the full journey takes well over 30 hours. A common compromise is to fly one way and stop in Da Nang for Hoi An.

When is the best time to visit each city?

Hanoi is best from about October to April, with November to January the most comfortable, though winter can feel cool and grey. Ho Chi Minh City is hot all year; its dry season usually runs from around December to April, while the rest of the year brings heavy afternoon downpours. December to February is a good compromise for both.

Which city is better for a first trip to Vietnam?

Hanoi, for most people. The Old Quarter, lakes and temples give a stronger sense of history in a compact area, and it is the gateway to Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh. Ho Chi Minh City is more modern and spread out. Ideally do both, flying between them, and add Hoi An if you have two weeks.
