Crete or Thessaloniki? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Crete for a summer holiday built around beaches, gorges and island food. Pick Thessaloniki for a city break with Byzantine monuments, markets and the best everyday eating and nightlife in northern Greece, and it is clearly cheaper on our numbers. They are different trips: one is a beach island, the other a real working city.

Crete: suits families, couples and older travellers who want a long beach-and-nature holiday with history and village food.

Thessaloniki: suits solo travellers, friends and food lovers who want a lively, affordable city with late nights and short-break energy.

Doing both in one trip

9 days: 3 in Thessaloniki + 6 in Crete

Start in Thessaloniki for the city part while you are fresh, then fly south and end on Crete's beaches to wind down.

Getting between them: Direct flights between Thessaloniki and Heraklion (and seasonally Chania) take about 1 h 15 plus airport time. A ferry exists in summer but takes the best part of a day; the flight is the realistic option. Distance about 629 km as the crow flies. Check current timetables.

Common questions

Is Crete or Thessaloniki cheaper?

Thessaloniki is clearly cheaper on our numbers: about €126 per person per day at mid-range against about €165 for Crete. Eating out in particular costs less, and city hotels do not have the same summer peak as island resorts. Crete also usually means paying for a rental car, while Thessaloniki's centre is walkable and served by buses and the metro.

Can I go to the beach from Thessaloniki?

Not in the city itself, where the bay is not a swimming spot. The nearest good beaches are on the Kassandra and Sithonia peninsulas of Halkidiki, roughly one to two hours by car or regional bus. That makes Thessaloniki a decent base for a mixed trip, but if beaches are the priority Crete gives you far more without the daily drive.

How do I get from Thessaloniki to Crete?

Fly. Direct flights connect Thessaloniki with Heraklion year-round and with Chania in season, taking about an hour and a quarter in the air. A summer ferry also runs through the Aegean but takes the best part of a day, so it suits only travellers who want the sea journey itself. Book flights early for July and August.

When should I visit each one?

Crete is best from June to September for swimming, with late May and late September quieter. Thessaloniki works best in April, June, September, October and November, when walking the hilly Ano Poli is comfortable. If you combine them, September is the month that suits both: the sea in Crete is still warm and the city is pleasant.
