Crete or Santorini? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Crete for a longer holiday with real variety: beaches, gorges, Minoan sites and some of Greece's best food, at about €165 a day mid-range on our numbers. Pick Santorini for a short, romantic stay built around caldera views, sunsets and wine, and budget around €260 a day. Families should almost always choose Crete.
Crete: suits families, couples and older travellers with a week or more who want beaches, hiking, archaeology and excellent tavernas.
Santorini: suits couples, honeymooners and photographers who want three or four days of caldera views, sunsets and wineries.

Common questions
Is Crete or Santorini cheaper?
Crete, by a clear margin. Our mid-range figure is about €165 per person per day against about €260 in Santorini. Accommodation makes most of the difference, and Cretan tavernas, especially in inland villages, are among the best value in Greece. You will need to budget for car hire in Crete, but it is still the cheaper holiday overall.
How do I get from Crete to Santorini?
The usual way is a high-speed ferry from Heraklion, taking about 2 hours and running mainly from spring to October; some summer sailings also leave from Rethymno. Strong winds can cancel crossings, so keep a buffer day before an international flight. Flights between the two generally connect through Athens, which takes longer than the boat.
Is Crete or Santorini better for families?
Crete. It has long sandy beaches with shallow water, family hotels, accessible archaeological sites like Knossos and plenty to fill a week. Santorini is built on cliffs, with many steps, crowded lanes and mostly dark volcanic beaches that get very hot. Its accommodation is aimed at couples, and many caldera hotels do not accept young children.
How long should I spend on Crete?
At least a week. Crete is Greece's largest island, roughly 260 km long, and driving from Chania to the far east takes several hours. With seven days you can base yourself around Chania for beaches and the Samaria Gorge, then move to Heraklion for Knossos. With less time, choose one region rather than rushing across the island.
