Crete or Rhodes? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Crete if you want variety and depth: gorges, mountain villages, very different coasts and the stronger food culture, best with a week or more and a car. Pick Rhodes if you want a medieval walled town, Lindos and easy beaches on a smaller island you can cover in five or six days. On our mid-range numbers Crete is very slightly cheaper.
Crete: suits families, couples and older travellers who want a long holiday mixing beaches, hiking, Minoan sites and village food.
Rhodes: suits couples and first-timers who want a walkable medieval old town, a famous acropolis at Lindos and beaches within an hour's drive.

Common questions
Is Crete or Rhodes cheaper?
They are close. Our mid-range estimate is about €165 per person per day for Crete and about €170 for Rhodes, so Crete edges it. Crete has more scope for cheap rooms and tavernas away from the north-coast resorts, while Rhodes prices stay high around Lindos and the Old Town. Car hire is needed more in Crete, which narrows the gap.
Which island has better beaches?
Crete has the wider choice: lagoon-like Balos, pink-tinged Elafonisi, the long sands near Falasarna and quiet coves on the south coast. Rhodes has good sheltered east-coast beaches such as Tsambika, Anthony Quinn Bay and St Paul's Bay at Lindos, plus the windy west coast for kitesurfers. For a beach-only holiday Crete wins; for beaches near a historic town, Rhodes is easier.
How long do I need on each island?
Crete needs at least a week to see both the west, around Chania, and the centre, around Heraklion; two weeks is not too much. Rhodes works well in four to six days: one or two days in the Old Town, a day at Lindos, a beach day and a boat trip to Symi. Trying to see Crete in four days means a lot of driving.
Can you get from Crete to Rhodes easily?
Not very. Direct flights between Heraklion and Rhodes run seasonally and take about an hour; outside those dates you connect through Athens. The ferry route goes via Kasos and Karpathos, runs only a few times a week and takes most of a day, though it is scenic. Plan the crossing first and build the rest of the trip around it.
