Cebu or El Nido? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick El Nido for the Philippines' classic island-hopping landscape: limestone cliffs, lagoons and beaches in Bacuit Bay, best for a beach-focused trip. Pick Cebu for variety and easier logistics: lechon, canyoneering at Kawasan Falls, diving at Moalboal and Mactan resorts, with a big international airport. Cebu is slightly cheaper on our numbers, about ₱5,700 a day mid-range against ₱6,400 in El Nido.
Cebu: suits first-timers, backpackers and friends who want food, diving, waterfalls and history with good flight links.
El Nido: suits solo travellers, friends and backpackers who want island-hopping boat days, lagoons and beaches.

Common questions
Is Cebu or El Nido cheaper?
Cebu is slightly cheaper on our numbers: about ₱5,700 per person per day at mid-range, against ₱6,400 in El Nido. Everything in El Nido is shipped or trucked in, and island-hopping tours, environmental fees and transfers add up. Cebu has cheaper local food and more choice of hotels at every level.
How do I get from Cebu to El Nido?
Some direct flights from Cebu to El Nido's small Lio airport have operated, which is the quickest option if available. Otherwise fly from Cebu to Puerto Princesa, about 1 h 15, and take a shared or private van to El Nido, roughly 5–6 h. Check current schedules, as routes to Lio change.
When is the best time to visit Cebu and El Nido?
The driest months are roughly December to May, with the calmest seas for El Nido's boat tours from about February to May. From around June to October rain and stronger winds can cancel trips, especially in El Nido. Typhoons are a risk in the second half of the year. Temperatures are warm all year, about 26–31°C.
Should I see the whale sharks at Oslob?
That is your call, but know the issue: the whale sharks at Oslob are fed to keep them near shore, which many marine scientists criticise because it changes their behaviour. If you want to see marine life responsibly, consider snorkelling with the sardine run at Moalboal instead, or a whale-shark trip elsewhere that does not rely on feeding.
