Athens or Santorini? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Athens for ancient history, a real working city and good food at fair prices, about €168 a day mid-range on our numbers. Pick Santorini for caldera views, sunsets and wine, mainly as a couple, and budget for it: about €260 a day, with heavy cruise-ship crowds in high season. For a first trip to Greece, doing both is the classic plan.

Athens: suits couples, friends and first-timers who want the Acropolis, museums, neighbourhood tavernas and nightlife at city prices.

Santorini: suits couples, honeymooners and photographers who want caldera views, sunsets, wineries and a few slow days.

Doing both in one trip

7 days: 3 in Athens + 4 in Santorini

Start in Athens, where most international flights land, then go to Santorini. Fly home from Santorini if there is a direct flight in season, or return to Athens the evening before your flight: summer meltemi winds sometimes cancel ferries.

Getting between them: Flight about 45–50 minutes plus airport time, or ferry from Piraeus: about 5 hours by high-speed boat, 7–8 hours by conventional ferry, with some sailings from Rafina — check current timetables. Distance about 233 km as the crow flies. Check current timetables.

Common questions

Is Athens or Santorini more expensive?

Santorini, clearly. Our mid-range figure is about €260 per person per day there, against about €168 in Athens. The difference is mostly accommodation: rooms with caldera views in Oia, Imerovigli or Fira cost a premium, especially in July and August. Eating in Pyrgos, Megalochori or near Vlychada rather than on the caldera edge brings food costs down noticeably.

How do I get from Athens to Santorini?

Flights take about 45–50 minutes, with several a day in summer. Ferries leave from Piraeus, and some from Rafina: high-speed boats take around 5 hours, conventional ferries about 7–8 hours but are cheaper and steadier in wind. In July and August the meltemi can delay or cancel sailings, so never plan a ferry on the day of your international flight.

How many days do I need in each?

Two or three days covers the essentials of Athens: the Acropolis and its museum, the Ancient Agora, Plaka and the National Archaeological Museum, with an evening at Cape Sounion. Santorini needs three or four days to walk the caldera path, see Akrotiri, visit a winery and take a boat trip without spending every evening in the Oia sunset crowd.

When is the best time to visit?

April to June and September to October are the sweet spot for both; our data also includes November, though many Santorini hotels and tavernas close by then. July and August bring heat, about 34°C in Athens, and peak crowds and prices in Santorini, where cruise ships add thousands of day visitors. Spring and autumn are far calmer.
