Athens or Rhodes? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Athens for a city break of ancient sites, museums and nightlife; pick Rhodes for a beach holiday with a medieval walled town and Lindos thrown in. Mid-range costs are almost level (Athens €168, Rhodes €170 per person per day). Rhodes is the better choice if swimming is a must; Athens if it isn't.

Athens: suits couples, friends and first-timers who want the Acropolis, museums and a big city's food and nightlife.

Rhodes: suits couples and families who want beaches plus history, centred on the medieval Old Town and Lindos.

Common questions

Is Athens or Rhodes cheaper?

They are practically the same on mid-range numbers: about €168 per person per day in Athens and €170 in Rhodes. Athens has cheaper public transport and more budget eating. Rhodes can be cheaper on rooms outside August, but Lindos and beach hotels push the average up. Your choice of base matters more than the destination.

How do I get from Athens to Rhodes?

Flying is the practical option: about 1 hour from Athens airport, with several flights a day in season. Ferries from Piraeus run too, but the trip takes roughly 13–17 hours with stops at other Dodecanese islands. Take the ferry only if you want to island-hop. Check current timetables before booking.

Which is better in spring or autumn?

Both are at their best then. Rhodes is one of the warmest Greek islands, so swimming is pleasant from late May into October. April and May, then October and November, are the most comfortable months. Athens is ideal for walking in spring and autumn, when summer heat is gone.

Is Rhodes Old Town worth it if I've seen Athens?

Yes, because it's a completely different period. Athens is mostly classical; Rhodes Old Town is a medieval walled city built by the Knights of St John, still lived in, with the Palace of the Grand Master and cobbled streets. Lindos adds an ancient acropolis above the sea.
