Common questions
Is Athens or Istanbul cheaper?
Istanbul, slightly. Our mid-range estimate is about €160 per person per day in Istanbul against about €168 in Athens. Street food is cheap in both, while hotels in central areas are expensive in both. Prices in Istanbul have risen quickly.
Which is better for history?
Athens is about ancient Greece: the Acropolis and the Agora. Istanbul is about the Byzantine and Ottoman empires: Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, the great mosques and the city walls. Athens has the stronger museums for antiquity, led by the Acropolis Museum; Istanbul has more layers in one place. Choose by the era that interests you most.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring and autumn suit both: April to June and September to November in Athens, and May, June, September and October in Istanbul. July is hot in Athens, around 34°C, and the Acropolis can close at midday in heatwaves. Istanbul is milder in summer, around 30°C, but crowded.
How do I travel between Athens and Istanbul?
Fly; the flight is about 1 h 15 to 1 h 30, with several daily departures to both Istanbul airports. Check which airport you land at, as Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side is far from Sultanahmet. Buses take much longer, often overnight via Thessaloniki. Check current options.
