Athens or Crete? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Athens for a short, dense city break built around ancient sites, museums and late dinners; pick Crete for a week or more of beaches, gorges and village food. On the mid-range numbers they cost almost the same (Crete €165 vs Athens €168 per person per day), so choose by the trip you want, not the price.
Athens: suits couples, friends and first-timers who want the Acropolis, museums and a walkable city with lively evenings.
Crete: suits families, couples and older travellers with a week or more who want beaches, hiking and food rooted in villages.

Common questions
Is Athens or Crete cheaper?
On mid-range numbers they are nearly level: about €168 per person per day in Athens and €165 in Crete. Crete's real extra cost is a hire car, while Athens hotels near the centre have become pricey. Eating out is good value in both, especially away from Plaka in Athens and away from the big north-coast resorts in Crete.
How do I get from Athens to Crete?
Fly from Athens to Heraklion or Chania in about 50 minutes, or take the overnight ferry from Piraeus, roughly 8–9 hours, arriving early morning. A cabin on the overnight boat saves a hotel night. In summer there are also faster daytime sailings. Check current timetables, as schedules change by season.
Can I see Crete in a few days from Athens?
Only a small part of it. Crete is about 260 km long, and driving from Chania to the east end takes several hours. With three days, pick one base: Heraklion for Knossos and the archaeological museum, or Chania for the Old Town and western beaches. A week lets you see the island properly.
Which is better for a family holiday?
Crete, for most families. It has shallow sandy beaches, plenty of family-run hotels and enough day trips, from Knossos to caves and boat rides, to fill a week. Athens works for two or three days with older children interested in history, but summer heat and a lack of beaches make it harder with young kids.
