Where to stay in Versailles
Versailles is divided into a grid-like urban layout by three grand avenues radiating from the Place d'Armes. The town is split primarily into two historic quarters: Notre-Dame and Saint-Louis. Choosing where to stay depends on whether you prefer a bustling market atmosphere or a quieter, residential vibe. Most visitors arrive via the Rive Gauche station, making southern proximity convenient for those commuting from Paris for just one or two nights.

Notre-Dame
This is the liveliest district, centered around the Place du Marché Notre-Dame. It feels genuinely local despite the tourists, with excellent cheese shops and bistros. You are a ten-minute walk from the Palace gates and right next to the Musée Lambinet. The main shopping thoroughfare, Rue de la Paroisse, is perfect for evening strolls before dinner at a traditional brasserie.
Saint-Louis
Located south of the Palace, this area feels more intimate and residential. It is home to the Cathédrale Saint-Louis and the fascinating Potager du Roi (King's Kitchen Garden). Walking here is a delight through narrow streets like Rue Satory, which is packed with small restaurants. It is the closest neighborhood to the Versailles Château Rive Gauche train station, making Paris trips effortless.
Montreuil
This is a residential neighborhood east of the center. It has a relaxed, provincial feel with its own Rue de Montreuil lined with bakeries and flower shops. While you are further from the Palace, you get more space for your money and a break from the crowds. The walk to the town center is flat and passes through pleasant local residential squares.

Avoid staying near the Versailles-Chantiers station if you want charm; it is a major transit hub surrounded by modern office blocks. While practical for trains, it lacks the historic atmosphere of the two main quarters and involves a longer walk to the Palace entrance.

Common questions
Is it worth staying overnight or just visiting on a day trip?
Stay at least one night. After the tour buses leave at 5:00 PM, the town transforms. You can enjoy the Gardens during the 'Grandes Eaux Musicales' or a quiet dinner in Saint-Louis without rushing back to the RER station. It allows you to visit the Trianon estate when it opens in the afternoon.
Which train station is most convenient for accommodation?
Versailles Château Rive Gauche is the most central for the Notre-Dame and Saint-Louis districts. If you stay in Notre-Dame, Versailles Rive Droite is also convenient for trains to Paris-Saint-Lazare. Avoid Chantiers unless you are coming from the south of France or need a TGV connection, as it is further from the main sights.
Are the hotels inside the Palace grounds accessible?
There is only one ultra-luxury hotel, Airelles Grand Contrôle, located within the estate. It is extremely expensive but offers private after-hours tours. For most travelers, staying just outside the gates in Notre-Dame provides a similar sense of history at a fraction of the cost, with the park gates still being only minutes away by foot.
