Why visit Versailles?

Versailles, 20 kilometres west of Paris, is the palace Louis XIV turned into the seat of royal power and the model for courts across Europe. The Hall of Mirrors, with its 357 mirrors facing the garden windows, is where the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, and the State Apartments and the King's and Queen's chambers show the scale of the monarchy at its height.

The gardens designed by André Le Nôtre stretch to the horizon, with the Grand Canal, sculpted fountains and formal parterres; on many weekends from spring to autumn the fountains run to music. Further into the estate are the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon and Marie-Antoinette's Hamlet, a rustic village she had built for herself. Rent a bike or a rowing boat on the canal to cover the distances. Book timed tickets in advance, arrive early, and plan a full day; the RER C train links central Paris with Versailles in under an hour.
