Where to stay in Merzouga
Merzouga sits on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in southeastern Morocco, a desert settlement where accommodation choices divide sharply between village grid streets and the desert fringe. Where you sleep dictates whether you wake up looking at sand dunes from a tent flap or walking through dusty streets near local shops.

Erg Chebbi Dune Line
Staying right against the dunes means you step out of your door onto the sand. It feels isolated and silent at night, lit mostly by stars and campfire. From here, camel treks and quad bike excursions start immediately. You can walk straight into the sea of sand, though reaching town requires a 4x4 transfer or a long walk across the flats.
Merzouga Village Center
The village is a grid of dusty unpaved streets with small grocery shops, local tagine spots, and bus drop-off points. It lacks the scenic dunes directly outside your window, but it is entirely walkable. You can easily stroll to local cooperatives, Berber rug shops, and cafes to watch daily village life unfold.
Hassi Labied
This smaller village sits beside a palm grove and irrigation canals, offering a slower, more residential feel than central Merzouga. It is walkable within itself, featuring traditional mud-brick architecture, local gardens, and family-run riads. The Erg Chebbi dunes are still within a short walking distance to the east, but the village stays removed from the main tourist strip.

Compare car rentals in MerzougaOne thing to think about
Avoid booking standard hotels right on the main approach road through the southern flats without checking if they offer actual dune access. Many places advertise desert views but are actually far from the sand, leaving you stranded in a dusty roadside lot far from the Erg Chebbi experience.
Once you have a bed
The things that sell out first in Merzouga are the small-group tours and the skip-the-line tickets.

Common questions
How do I get to my desert camp from the village?
Most desert camps provide 4x4 transfers from Merzouga village or Hassi Labied because cars cannot drive across deep sand dunes. If your booking includes a camel trek, you will typically meet your guides at a staging point on the edge of the dunes and ride in for about an hour or two.
Is electricity available at the desert camps?
Most permanent desert camps have electricity powered by generators or solar panels, usually available in the main communal tents throughout the evening. However, power may be switched off late at night, and Wi-Fi is generally very weak or entirely absent once you are out in the dunes.
Do I need a 4x4 vehicle to reach Merzouga?
No, the main sealed road N13 runs right to Merzouga village, so standard sedans can make the drive safely from Erfoud or Rissani. You only need a 4x4 or camel if you are heading past the village edge into the actual Erg Chebbi dunes to reach remote camps.
