Where to stay in Koufonisia

Koufonisia consists of two inhabited islands, Pano and Kato Koufonisi, with most visitors staying on Pano Koufonisi. The settlement is compact, flat, and entirely pedestrianised, radiating out from the main port and Hora. Because distances are short and vehicles are barely needed, choosing where to sleep depends entirely on whether you prefer stepping straight onto a sandy beach or staying steps away from the island's tavernas and bakery.

Koufonisia

Hora (Chora)

Mid-rangeTravelers who want car-free convenience, bustling tavernas, and immediate access to bakeries and shops.

Hora is the beating heart of the island, a whitewashed Cycladic village where narrow alleys smell of fresh bougatsa and grilled octopus. It sits right above the ferry port, meaning you can walk off the boat and into your room in five minutes. From here, Ammos Beach is at your feet, and the walking path to Fanos and Italida beaches starts right at the edge of the village.

Pori

UpscaleBeach lovers and solitude seekers who want to wake up directly on the island's best sand.

Pori is a sweeping, horseshoe-shaped bay on the northeastern coast, far removed from the ferry terminal. Staying here feels remote and breezy, dominated by the raw coastline and two exceptional beach bars, Kalofogo and Pori Beach Restaurant. While there are no shops here, the walk back to Hora takes about thirty minutes along a well-defined coastal track past Finikas and Italida.

Finikas

Mid-rangeFamilies and relaxed couples looking for a quieter coastal stay close to the water.

Finikas sits in a sheltered bay halfway between Hora and Pori beach, offering a laid-back village atmosphere centered around its namesake sandy cove and a dependable taverna. It feels significantly calmer than Hora while still keeping you connected. You can easily walk into Hora in fifteen minutes for supplies, or stroll down to nearby Italida and Fanos beaches without touching a car.

One thing to think about

Avoid booking accommodation solely based on online maps showing proximity to Pori if you rely on public transport or late-night taverna strolls. Walking back from Hora to the remote beaches in pitch darkness requires a flashlight and sturdy shoes, and the island’s single local bus has limited off-season frequency.

Common questions

Do I need to rent a car or scooter on Koufonisia?

No, Koufonisia is famously car-lite and practically made for walking. Pano Koufonisi is only about 3.5 square kilometres, meaning you can reach almost every beach and the main village on foot within thirty to forty minutes. Many visitors rent bicycles, but walking is usually faster and far more pleasant along the coastal tracks.

Can I stay overnight on Kato Koufonisi?

No, Kato Koufonisi is entirely uninhabited except for a few goats and one excellent seasonal taverna, Fiema. There are no hotels, rooms to let, or electricity grids on the island. You visit exclusively via a ten-minute traditional boat taxi from Pano Koufonisi for day trips to its pristine swimming spots.

Which beach is best if the Meltemi winds are blowing?

When the strong northern Meltemi winds pick up, head south to beaches like Ammos or Fanos, which offer natural protection. Pori beach faces northeast and catches the full force of the wind, making it choppy, though it is the absolute place to be on calm, hot summer days.
