Where to stay in Kazbegi
Kazbegi, officially named Stepantsminda, is a high-altitude mountain settlement sliced down the middle by the Tergi River and dominated by Mount Kazbek. Most accommodation is concentrated in the compact town centre on the east bank, or strung along the steep hillside of Gergeti on the west bank. Choosing where to stay comes down to proximity to marshrutka buses and dining versus direct, unobstructed mountain views and quiet, uphill footpaths.

Stepantsminda Centre
This is the functional hub along the main Military Highway. Staying near the central square puts you within a five-minute walk of the bus terminal, local bakeries, and driver hubs for 4WD hire. It feels lively and rustic, with unpaved side streets leading off Alexander Kazbegi Street to simple guesthouses. It is convenient, though truck traffic along the highway can be noisy.
Gergeti Village
Set across the river on the western slopes, Gergeti feels far more rural with narrow dirt lanes, free-roaming livestock, and stone homesteads. You can walk straight out your front door onto the steep hiking trail leading up to the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church. It requires an uphill trek from town, but rewards you with dark night skies and dramatic views.
Upper Stepantsminda & Kuro Slopes
Positioned on the elevated eastern hillsides above the bus station, this area offers front-row views of Mount Kazbek across the valley. It is home to upscale properties like Rooms Hotel Kazbegi. The vibe is sophisticated and calm. You can walk down to town in 15 minutes, but the return is a steep incline, making taxis appealing after dinner.
Sno Valley & Juta
Located 20 kilometres southeast of Stepantsminda, the tiny hamlet of Juta sits at the mouth of the dramatic Chaukhi Massif. It feels completely detached from town life, consisting mostly of wooden mountain huts, campsites, and eco-lodges. The area is car-free beyond the main parking lot, with hiking trails to alpine lakes starting right from the guest houses.
One thing to think about
Avoid booking accommodation directly facing the E117 / Georgian Military Road in lower Stepantsminda. International freight trucks idle here day and night waiting for the border crossing, causing persistent diesel exhaust fumes and heavy traffic noise that ruins an otherwise peaceful mountain stay.

Common questions
Do I need a car to stay in Kazbegi?
No, if you stay in Stepantsminda Centre or Gergeti, everything essential is walkable. Local 4WD taxis line the main square to take you to remote valley trailheads like Juta or Truso. However, having a personal SUV gives you complete freedom to explore nearby gorges without negotiating fares.
How difficult is the hike to Gergeti Trinity Church from town?
The hike from Gergeti village up to the church takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours depending on your fitness. The path is extremely steep, unpaved, and can be muddy. If you prefer not to hike, a paved mountain road connects the main highway to the church parking lot in 15 minutes by car.
Where should I stay for the best view of Mount Kazbek?
Book a west-facing room in Upper Stepantsminda on the eastern slopes of the valley. Being elevated across the river gives you a complete, clear panorama of the 5,054-metre peak framed above Gergeti Trinity Church, especially during sunrise when the peak lights up pink.
