Why visit Kazbegi?

Kazbegi, officially the town of Stepantsminda, lies high in Georgia's Greater Caucasus, about three hours north of Tbilisi along the historic Georgian Military Road. It is the country's most famous mountain view: the Gergeti Trinity Church, a 14th-century church on a ridge above town, set against the glacier-covered cone of Mount Kazbek, which rises over 5,000 metres.

Walk or drive up to Gergeti for sunrise or sunset, then explore the surrounding valleys. Hikes lead to the Gergeti Glacier, along the Truso Valley with its mineral springs and abandoned villages, and into the Juta Valley beneath the Chaukhi peaks. The drive itself is a highlight, passing the Ananuri fortress beside a reservoir, the ski resort of Gudauri, and the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument overlooking the Aragvi gorge. Stay in guesthouses with mountain views and eat khinkali, hearty soups and local cheese. Snow can close the road in winter, so the best months are summer and early autumn.
