Where to stay in Jodhpur
Jodhpur, in Rajasthan, is called the Blue City for the indigo-washed houses of its old quarter, which spread below the cliff-top Mehrangarh Fort. Staying in the old city puts you in the blue lanes with rooftop views of the fort, while heritage palaces and hotels in the newer town offer more space.

Old city near the Clock Tower
Guesthouses and boutique havelis in the old city, around the Clock Tower and Sardar Market, have rooftop restaurants facing Mehrangarh. Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell is nearby. Lanes are narrow and busy, and cars may not reach your door.
Navchokiya and the Brahmpuri blue lanes
These neighbourhoods right under the fort walls have the bluest streets and small guesthouses with views straight up to the ramparts. It is quiet in the early morning and the path up to the fort is close. Facilities are simple.
Umaid Bhawan and Ratanada
Outside the old city, the Umaid Bhawan Palace, part of which is still a royal residence and part a luxury hotel, sits on a hill to the southeast. The area has heritage hotels with gardens and pools, a short drive from the fort and markets.
One thing to think about
Old city lanes are very narrow and crowded with motorbikes, so arrange pick-up from your hotel if you have luggage. Some rooftop restaurants are loud in the evening; ask for a room away from them if you sleep lightly.

Once you have a bed
The things that sell out first in Jodhpur are the small-group tours and the skip-the-line tickets.
Common questions
How long should I stay in Jodhpur?
Two nights are enough to see Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, the Clock Tower market, the stepwell and Umaid Bhawan Palace, and to wander the blue lanes. Add a day for trips to the Bishnoi villages, Mandore Gardens or the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park.
Is Mehrangarh Fort worth visiting?
Yes. Mehrangarh is one of the largest and best-preserved forts in India, with palaces, a museum of royal collections and views over the blue city from the ramparts. Allow at least three hours, and use the audio guide. Zip-line tours also run around the walls.
When is the best time to visit Jodhpur?
October to March has pleasant days and cool nights. April to June is extremely hot, and the monsoon brings rain from July to September. Festivals such as the Rajasthan International Folk Festival in October are held at Mehrangarh.
