Why visit Jodhpur?

Jodhpur, in the Indian state of Rajasthan on the edge of the Thar Desert, is called the Blue City because of the indigo-painted houses of its old town. Above it, on a sheer rock, rises Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest and most impressive forts in India.

Inside Mehrangarh, a museum displays palanquins, weapons, paintings and richly decorated royal apartments, and the ramparts give views over the sea of blue houses. Below the fort, Jaswant Thada is a white marble memorial set among gardens. Explore the bazaars around the Clock Tower and Sardar Market, known for spices, textiles and handicrafts, and the stepwell of Toorji Ka Jhalra. Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in the 1940s, is partly a royal residence, partly a luxury hotel and partly a museum. Adventurous visitors can fly over the fort on zip lines. Try mirchi vada, a spicy fried chilli snack, and makhaniya lassi. Jodhpur links well with Udaipur and Jaisalmer.
