Where to stay in Djerba

Djerba is a flat, sunny island off southern Tunisia, connected to the mainland by a causeway and a ferry. Most beach hotels line the northeast coast in the tourist zone, while Houmt Souk, the main town, has the markets and character, and villages such as Erriadh and Guellala show traditional island life.

Djerba

Zone touristique (Sidi Mahrez and Aghir)

Mid-rangeFamilies and beach lovers who want resorts on a sandy coast.

The long beaches of Sidi Mahrez and further south towards Aghir are lined with large resort hotels with pools, many all-inclusive. The water is shallow and calm, good for children. You will need taxis to reach Houmt Souk and the villages.

Houmt Souk

CheapestTravellers who want markets, cafes and a local atmosphere.

The island's main town has covered souks, the Borj el Kebir fortress by the harbour and cafes on shady squares. Restored funduqs (old caravanserais) and guesthouses offer rooms with character, and there is a lively fish auction at the port. The beaches are a short drive away.

Erriadh

Mid-rangeCouples and art lovers who want a quiet village base.

Erriadh is home to the El Ghriba synagogue, one of the oldest in Africa, and to Djerbahood, an open-air gallery of street art painted by artists from around the world. Small guesthouses in traditional houses make it a peaceful place to stay.

One thing to think about

The resort strip is spread out, so a hotel can be far from shops and restaurants; check whether you will depend on the hotel for every meal. Summer is very hot, and the beaches are busiest in July and August.

Once you have a bed

The things that sell out first in Djerba are the small-group tours and the skip-the-line tickets.
