Why visit Djerba?

Djerba is an island in the Gulf of Gabès in southern Tunisia, connected to the mainland by a causeway with Roman origins and by ferry. Known for sandy beaches, whitewashed houses and a mild climate, it has long been a beach destination with a distinct culture.

Houmt Souk, the main town, has covered markets, the Borj el Kebir fortress by the sea and traditional fondouks, old caravanserais. In the village of Erriadh, the El Ghriba Synagogue is one of the oldest in Africa and the focus of an annual Jewish pilgrimage, and the village's streets are covered with murals from the Djerbahood street-art project. Guellala is known for its pottery. The eastern coast has long sandy beaches with resort hotels, and flamingos can be seen on the lagoons. From Djerba you can drive to the Ksar villages of the south and to Matmata, known for its underground troglodyte houses and Star Wars filming locations. Try brik, couscous with fish and grilled seafood.
