Where to stay in Almaty
Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city, laid out on a grid that slopes up towards the snowy Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. 'Up' means south, towards the mountains, and 'down' means north. Most visitors stay in the central grid, close to parks, cafes and metro stations, with the mountain resorts of Medeu and Shymbulak a short drive above the city.

Golden Square (central Almaty)
The central grid between Abay Avenue, Dostyk Avenue and Panfilov Park has most of the hotels and cafes. You can walk to Panfilov Park and Zenkov Cathedral, the Green Bazaar and Arbat (Zhibek Zholy pedestrian street), and the metro runs along Abay. It is the most convenient base in the city.
Dostyk and Kok Tobe area
Along the upper part of Dostyk Avenue there are big international hotels and shopping centres. The Kok Tobe cable car starts nearby, and the road to Medeu and Shymbulak heads into the mountains from here, so you are well placed for day trips while staying in town.
Near the Green Bazaar and Arbat
Around Zhibek Zholy and the Green Bazaar there are hostels and simple hotels close to the market, cheap canteens and the Arbat pedestrian street with its street musicians. Panfilov Park is a short walk away. It is lively and practical, but can be noisy.
Shymbulak and Medeu
Above the city, Medeu has the high-altitude skating rink and Shymbulak a ski resort with lifts reaching above 3,000 metres. Staying here means mountain air and easy access to slopes and trails, but you will need a taxi or bus to reach the city's restaurants.
One thing to think about
Hotels in the far northern districts or near the airport can be cheap but are a long ride from the centre and the mountains. Check traffic times before booking: Almaty's main avenues can be very congested at rush hour.
Once you have a bed
The things that sell out first in Almaty are the small-group tours and the skip-the-line tickets.
Common questions
Is Almaty walkable?
The central grid is walkable, with tree-lined streets, parks and plenty of cafes, and the metro line runs along the main avenues. Distances are larger than they look on the map, so ride-hailing apps are widely used and inexpensive for longer trips, including to Kok Tobe and the mountain resorts.
How do I get to Shymbulak from the city?
Take a taxi or bus to Medeu, then the gondola up to Shymbulak ski resort. From there further lifts go higher into the mountains. The trip from the centre takes around 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, so a day trip is easy from a city hotel.
When is the best time to stay in Almaty?
Late spring and early autumn are mild and good for hiking and city walks. Summer is warm and busy in the mountains, while winter brings snow, skiing at Shymbulak and skating at Medeu. Central hotels work well in every season.
