Why visit Almaty?

Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city and former capital, sits at the foot of the snow-capped Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, which makes it one of the few big cities where you can be in alpine scenery within half an hour. Wide, tree-lined avenues, Soviet-era buildings and modern cafés give it a relaxed, green character.

See the colourful wooden Ascension Cathedral in Panfilov Park, the Green Bazaar for dried fruit, nuts and local produce, and the Central State Museum. A cable car climbs Kok Tobe hill for views over the city. Above the city, Medeu holds a famous high-altitude ice rink and the road continues to the Shymbulak ski resort. Day trips reach Big Almaty Lake, a turquoise reservoir in the mountains, and further afield the Charyn Canyon, often compared to a smaller Grand Canyon, and the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes, the latter with a drowned forest of spruce trunks rising from the water. Try beshbarmak, plov and horse-milk kumis.
