Is Zadar safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Zadar is a very safe city with low crime, and the old town and waterfront are lively and relaxed late into the evening. The realistic risks are petty theft in summer crowds, padded restaurant bills, and the sun and sea. Violent crime against visitors is rare.
The real risks
Fish priced by the kilo
A large fish served without telling you the total can make a big bill. Ask to see it weighed and agree the price first.
Cover charges and extras
A kuvert (cover charge) for bread is legal if listed on the menu. Check the menu and send back bread you do not want.
Petty theft in crowds
Possible on the Riva at sunset, at the Sea Organ and on busy park boardwalks. Keep bags closed and phones secure.
Slippery stone
The polished marble of Kalelarga and the steps of the Sea Organ are slippery when wet. Watch children near the sea edge.
Sea and sun
Swimming off the Riva steps is popular, but there are sea urchins on rocky shores and boat traffic in the channel. Wear water shoes and stay close to the steps.
Driving to the parks
Roads to Plitvice are busy in summer, and fog or snow is possible inland in winter. Leave early and drive carefully.
Areas and times to take care
The old town, the Riva and the residential areas across the footbridge are safe in the evening. There are no areas of particular concern for visitors.
Getting around safely
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are available; the airport is about 8 km away (roughly €20–30 by taxi), and an airport bus timed with flights runs to the bus station and the harbour. Local Liburnija buses link the old town with Borik. For Plitvice and Krka, choose a reputable bus or tour, or rent a car.
Solo and women travellers
Zadar is easy and relaxed for women travelling alone. The old town is compact and busy until late in summer. Usual precautions apply in bars, and a taxi is sensible if you are going back to Borik late at night.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. In July and August highs average about 30°C, so use sunscreen and carry water, especially on the shadeless boardwalks of the national parks. Watch for sea urchins on rocky beaches. EU visitors should carry an EHIC; others should have travel insurance.
