Is Vilnius safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Vilnius is a safe city with low crime against visitors. The realistic risks are occasional pickpocketing, overcharging in a few late-night bars, uneven cobbles and, in winter, ice and cold.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
Uncommon but possible in crowded Old Town streets, at the Christmas market and on buses. Keep bags closed.
Bar bills
A few late-night bars and clubs have overcharged tourists; check prices before ordering and avoid places touts recommend.
Cobbles
Old Town cobbles are uneven and hard on ankles and wheeled suitcases.
Winter ice
Pavements can be icy from December to March; wear shoes with grip.
Taxis
Use Bolt or another app rather than hailing unmarked cars.
Lakes
At Trakai, swim only in designated areas; water is cold outside summer.
Areas and times to take care
The Old Town, Užupis and the city centre around Gedimino Avenue are safe and lively. Late at night, take normal care around the railway and bus stations and in poorly lit streets, as in any city.
Getting around safely
Buses and trolleybuses are safe; buy tickets with the Trafi or m.Ticket apps. Bolt is widely used and cheap. Trains to Trakai and Kaunas are safe and comfortable.
Solo and women travellers
Vilnius is comfortable for solo women. Normal precautions apply in nightlife areas; use Bolt for late returns and choose well-reviewed hostels.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. Ticks, which can carry tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease, are common in forests and parks in the warm months. EU visitors should bring a European Health Insurance Card (UK visitors a GHIC); everyone should have travel insurance.
