Is Valletta safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Valletta is very safe, with low crime and a quiet atmosphere at night. The realistic risks are heavy traffic, summer heat, slippery rocks when swimming, and occasional pickpocketing on crowded buses and in nightlife areas such as nearby Paceville. Violent crime against visitors is not a concern for most travellers.

The real risks

Traffic

Malta drives on the left and traffic is heavy. Look right first when crossing and avoid driving in Valletta.

Heat and sun

July and August reach about 31–32°C with strong sun. Rest at midday and carry water.

Swimming from rocks

Rocky platforms can be slippery and seas rough in wind. Use ladders and check flags and conditions, especially at the Blue Lagoon.

Pickpocketing

Possible on crowded buses and ferries in summer and in busy nightlife areas. Keep valuables zipped away.

Steep streets

Valletta is built on a slope with stepped streets; wear comfortable shoes and use the Barrakka Lift.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas of Valletta visitors need to avoid. Paceville in St Julian's, the main nightlife district, can get rowdy late at night, so take normal care there with drinks and belongings.

Getting around safely

Buses are safe but can be crowded and slow in traffic. Use licensed taxis or the Bolt and eCabs apps, which show the fare in advance. The Sliema and Three Cities ferries are an easy, safe way to move around the harbour.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally feel comfortable in Valletta: the city is small and calm, and English is widely spoken. Usual precautions apply: watch your drink in nightlife areas, use app taxis late at night and avoid isolated coastal paths after dark.

Health, water and heat

Tap water in Malta is generally considered safe but tastes salty because much of it is desalinated, so many people drink bottled water. Use sun protection in summer and drink plenty. Pharmacies are easy to find.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency number in Malta).
