Is the USA safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Most visits to the USA are trouble-free, and the major tourist areas of New York, Washington, Las Vegas, San Francisco and the national parks are generally safe with normal precautions. The realistic risks are petty theft and car break-ins, occasional street crime at night, road safety, and extreme heat and terrain in the desert parks. Gun violence is higher than in most countries but rarely affects visitors.
The real risks
Car break-ins
Very common in San Francisco and at trailheads; never leave anything visible in a parked car.
Pickpocketing and phone theft
Possible in Times Square, on crowded subways and at busy attractions. Keep phones secure on platforms.
Night-time street crime
Stay in busy, well-lit areas at night and avoid empty subway carriages and deserted streets late.
Heat and dehydration
Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon below the rim exceed 40°C in summer. Carry 3 litres of water each and never try to hike to the river and back in one day.
Road safety
Distances are long; take breaks and do not drive tired. Speed limits are enforced.
Severe weather
Hurricanes on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts (June–November), wildfires in the West, and winter storms; follow local alerts.
Areas and times to take care
Tourist neighbourhoods in Manhattan, Brooklyn, central Washington and San Francisco are busy and generally safe. In San Francisco, parts of the Tenderloin and some streets around Civic Center and lower Market Street have open drug use and visible homelessness; walk through quickly in daylight or avoid them at night. Ask your hotel about any local areas to avoid after dark.
Getting around safely
Subways and metros are generally safe; choose busier carriages at night. Uber and Lyft are widely available. In New York, use yellow cabs or apps, not unlicensed drivers offering rides at airports. Driving is on the right; carry your licence and an International Driving Permit if your licence is not in English.
Solo and women travellers
Many women travel the USA alone without problems. Normal city precautions apply: stay in busy areas at night, use ride-hailing apps and check the driver and plate, watch your drink in bars, and share your plans when hiking in national parks.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. Healthcare is excellent but extremely expensive for visitors; comprehensive travel insurance with high medical cover is essential. Heat, sun and dehydration are major risks in the desert Southwest; altitude affects some park visitors at the Grand Canyon rim (about 2,100 metres).
