Is Uganda safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Most visits to Uganda pass without problems, and park areas are well guarded. The realistic risks are petty crime in Kampala, road accidents, and specific security warnings for some border areas. Check your government's travel advice before booking.
The real risks
Road safety
Road accidents are the biggest risk for visitors. Use experienced drivers, avoid night driving and wear seatbelts.
Petty crime in Kampala
Pickpocketing and bag snatching occur, especially in crowded markets and at night. Use registered taxis or ride apps after dark.
Border-area security
Some areas near the borders with DRC and South Sudan carry warnings; in October 2023 two tourists and their guide were killed in an attack in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Follow official advice and travel with reputable operators.
Wildlife
Follow ranger instructions in parks, keep distance from animals and never walk alone in wildlife areas.
Areas and times to take care
Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja and the main national parks are visited by most tourists. Some parts of the north-east (Karamoja) and border regions near DRC and South Sudan have higher risks. Park visits are usually escorted or monitored by rangers.
Getting around safely
In Kampala, use Uber, Bolt or SafeBoda (motorbike taxis with helmets), and registered taxis at night. Boda-bodas without helmets are risky. For safaris, hire a 4x4 with an experienced driver-guide.
Solo and women travellers
Solo women travel in Uganda, especially on organised trips. Dress modestly in rural areas, avoid walking alone at night in Kampala and use trusted transport. Homosexuality is criminalised under strict laws passed in 2023; LGBTQ+ travellers should read official advice carefully.
Health, water and heat
Do not drink tap water. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required on arrival. Malaria is present throughout the country, so take antimalarials on medical advice and use nets and repellent. Medical facilities outside Kampala are limited; travel insurance with evacuation cover is essential.
