Is Turks and Caicos Islands safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Turks and Caicos is generally safe for visitors, especially in the main resort areas of Providenciales. Crime has risen in recent years, mostly away from tourist areas, so normal precautions are sensible. The realistic risks for visitors are theft from rooms, cars and beaches, and the sea and sun.

The real risks

Theft from villas and cars

Break-ins at rental villas and cars happen. Lock doors and windows, use the safe and leave nothing in parked cars.

Beach theft

Unattended bags on quieter beaches can be taken; keep valuables with you.

Night-time crime

Most incidents are in residential areas away from Grace Bay, but avoid walking in unlit areas at night.

Sea and boat safety

Choose licensed boat operators; currents can be strong at reef channels.

Hurricanes

The season runs from June to November, peaking August to October. Follow official warnings.

Areas and times to take care

Grace Bay, the Bight, Long Bay and Chalk Sound are where visitors stay and are comfortable. Take taxis rather than walking at night in less busy parts of Providenciales, and do not venture into unfamiliar residential areas after dark.

Getting around safely

Taxis are not metered and charge per person by zone; agree the fare before you go. Driving is on the left, and many rental cars are left-hand drive. There is no regular public bus. Ferries link Providenciales with North Caicos, and small planes serve Grand Turk.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally travel without problems in the resort areas. Use registered taxis, avoid isolated beaches after dark and keep an eye on drinks in bars.

Health, water and heat

Tap water in many hotels is from reverse osmosis and often safe, but most visitors drink bottled water; ask your accommodation. The sun is strong all year, so use reef-safe sunscreen. Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue occur occasionally. Medical facilities are limited and serious cases may be flown to the US, so take insurance with evacuation cover.

Emergency: 911 or 999
