Is Toronto safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Toronto is a safe city by North American standards, and most visitors have no problems. The realistic risks are petty theft, the occasional incident on transit, and winter conditions. Normal big-city awareness is enough.

The real risks

Petty theft

Phone and bag theft happens on busy streets and transit. Keep belongings close in crowds.

Transit incidents

There have been occasional incidents on the TTC; stay in busy carriages at night and stay alert.

Tip and service-charge traps

Card machines suggest 18-25% tips on the taxed total; groups may be charged service automatically. Read the bill.

Winter conditions

Ice and snow make pavements slippery from December to March; wear grippy boots.

Traffic and cyclists

Watch for streetcars and cyclists when crossing, especially downtown.

Areas and times to take care

Downtown, the waterfront, Yorkville, Kensington and the Distillery District are busy and generally safe. Some streets around Moss Park and the Dundas-Sherbourne area have visible homelessness and drug use; they are rarely a danger to visitors but are best avoided late at night.

Getting around safely

The TTC subway, streetcars and buses are generally safe and run late; overnight Blue Night buses cover main routes. Taxis and Uber/Lyft are widely available. For Niagara, use GO Transit, tours or a car.

Solo and women travellers

Toronto is generally comfortable for women travelling alone. Usual big-city precautions apply: use rideshare late at night and stay in busy, well-lit areas.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. Winter cold (often -5 to -15°C on cold days) and summer heat and humidity are the main health considerations. Healthcare is excellent but expensive for visitors, so carry insurance.

Emergency: 911 (police, fire, ambulance)
