Is Toledo safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Toledo is a very safe city with little crime, and walking in the old town at night is normal and pleasant once the day-trippers have left. The realistic issues are pickpocketing in the busiest lanes at midday, steep and slippery streets, narrow lanes shared with cars, and summer heat.
The real risks
Pickpocketing in crowds
Possible around Zocodover, the Cathedral and Santo Tomé between about 11:00 and 17:00, when tour groups fill the lanes. Keep bags zipped and in front.
Steep, slippery streets
The old town is built on a rock, with steep cobbled lanes. Wear shoes with grip, especially after rain.
Cars in narrow lanes
Some lanes are shared with cars and buses, with little room for pedestrians. Step into doorways when vehicles pass.
Summer heat
July and August highs average about 35°C. Walk early and late, carry water and rest in the afternoon.
Tourist menus
Picture menus near Zocodover and the Cathedral. Look for a menú del día board in Spanish in the side streets.
Areas and times to take care
The old town, the Jewish quarter and the paths along the Tagus are safe. The river path (Senda Ecológica) and the Mirador del Valle road are quiet after dark, so it is better to walk them in daylight and take a taxi to the Mirador for sunset.
Getting around safely
The old town is best on foot. Taxis are useful from the station (around €6–8 to Zocodover) and for the Mirador del Valle. City buses link the station and the old town. Avant trains reach Madrid Atocha in about 33 minutes; book ahead at weekends. Parking for visitors is outside the walls.
Solo and women travellers
Toledo is easy and relaxed for women travelling alone. The old town is compact and lively until late in summer. Usual precautions apply, such as taking a taxi rather than walking the empty river path or the Mirador del Valle road at night.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. In July and August highs average about 35°C and can exceed 40°C, so carry water and avoid the midday sun. Winter nights are close to freezing, with highs of about 10–13°C. EU visitors should carry an EHIC; others should have travel insurance.
