Is Thessaloniki safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Thessaloniki is a safe city with low violent crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing on crowded buses and in markets, heavy traffic and occasional demonstrations in the centre. Most visitors have no problems.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
On crowded buses, around the Kapani and Modiano markets and the bus station; keep bags closed.
Traffic
Drivers can be impatient, and scooters use pavements; cross carefully, even on green lights.
Demonstrations
Student and political protests sometimes take place around Aristotelous Square and the university; avoid them.
Taxi overcharging
Rare, but check the meter is on, especially from the airport.
Summer heat
July and August reach 33°C; carry water and avoid midday walks up to Ano Poli.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas visitors need to avoid. Take ordinary care late at night around the railway station and the western districts near Vardaris, and keep belongings close in busy markets.
Getting around safely
City buses and the new metro are cheap and safe. Licensed taxis are plentiful and use meters. Ano Poli is a steep climb; take bus 23 or a taxi up and walk down.
Solo and women travellers
Thessaloniki is comfortable for women travelling alone. Normal nightlife precautions apply in Ladadika and Valaoritou, where bars stay open late.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. Summers are hot and humid, so carry water. Healthcare is good; EU visitors should bring an EHIC or GHIC, others travel insurance.
