Is Tenerife safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Tenerife is very safe, with low crime. The realistic risks are petty theft in resorts and from hire cars, drink-related problems in nightlife areas such as Playa de las Américas, rough seas on some beaches, and mountain hazards on Teide and in the ravines.

The real risks

Sea conditions

Strong waves and currents on north-coast and exposed beaches. Respect red flags and swim at lifeguarded beaches.

Mountain and altitude

Teide's summit is at 3,718 m: cold, thin air and closures in wind. Move slowly, carry layers and check conditions.

Car break-ins

At trailheads and viewpoints. Leave nothing visible in the car.

Nightlife

On the Veronicas strip in Las Américas, watch your drink and avoid aggressive touts and 'free drink' offers.

Hiking in ravines

Trails like Masca need bookings, have closures and can be dangerous after rain. Check status before you go.

Areas and times to take care

Resorts, towns and villages are safe day and night. The busy nightlife area of Playa de las Américas gets rowdy late at weekends; normal precautions are enough. Timeshare touts on resort promenades are a nuisance rather than a danger.

Getting around safely

Licensed taxis are safe and metered. TITSA buses are reliable. Roads are good, but mountain roads to Teide, Masca and Anaga are narrow and winding; drive slowly and use passing places.

Solo and women travellers

Tenerife is easy and safe for solo women. The usual nightlife precautions apply in Las Américas; elsewhere the island is relaxed. Hikers should share their route with someone, especially in Anaga and Teno.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe in most places but often desalinated and tastes poor, so many people drink bottled water. The sun is strong all year, and altitude on Teide can cause headaches. Healthcare is good; EU visitors should bring an EHIC.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies.
