Is Tel Aviv safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Day-to-day crime in Tel Aviv is low, and the city is lively at night. The main concern is the regional security situation, which can change quickly and has included rocket and missile alerts. Check your government's travel advice before booking and again before you go, and know how to reach a shelter if alerts sound.

The real risks

Regional security

Conflict involving Gaza, Lebanon and other parties has led to rocket and missile alerts. Download the Home Front Command app, learn where the nearest shelter is and follow instructions.

Petty theft

On beaches and in crowded markets; do not leave bags unattended on the sand.

Strong currents

Swim only at beaches with lifeguards and between the flags.

Electric scooters and bikes

They ride fast on pavements; look carefully before stepping out.

Areas and times to take care

Central Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Neve Tzedek and the beachfront are busy and comfortable day and night. Some areas around the old central bus station in south Tel Aviv feel rougher, especially at night. Official advice for the West Bank, Gaza and border areas differs sharply from Tel Aviv; read it carefully if you plan day trips.

Getting around safely

Taxis are metered; insist on the meter or use apps such as Gett and Yango. Buses and the light rail are safe and modern, but most public transport stops from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening for Shabbat. Trains connect Tel Aviv with Jerusalem and Ben Gurion Airport.

Solo and women travellers

Tel Aviv is comfortable for solo women, with a relaxed, liberal atmosphere and busy streets at night. Usual nightlife precautions apply. Dress more modestly for religious sites in Jaffa and Jerusalem.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe. Summers are hot and humid (31–32°C), so drink water and use sunscreen. Medical care is excellent but expensive for visitors; travel insurance that covers the region is essential.

Emergency: 100 (police), 101 (Magen David Adom ambulance), 102 (fire)
