Is Tallinn safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Tallinn is a safe city with low crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in the Old Town on cruise days, overcharging in some late-night bars, rowdy groups at weekends, and icy cobbles in winter.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Possible in the crowded Old Town, especially on cruise-ship days and at the Christmas market. Keep bags closed and phones secure.

Bar overcharging

A few late-night bars and strip clubs have padded bills for tourists. Check prices and avoid places touts lead you to.

Weekend groups

Stag parties can be noisy in the Old Town on weekend nights.

Icy cobbles

From December to March, steep cobbled streets up to Toompea can be very slippery; wear shoes with grip.

Taxi pricing

Taxis set their own rates; use Bolt (an Estonian company) or check the rate on the window before getting in.

Cold

Winter temperatures often fall below 0°C with wind chill; dress warmly.

Areas and times to take care

The Old Town, Kalamaja, Telliskivi, Rotermann and Kadriorg are all safe. Take normal care late at night around bars in the Old Town and near the railway station, as in any city.

Getting around safely

Trams and buses are safe and reliable; pay by contactless card or app. Bolt is the main ride-hailing service and is cheap. Ferries to Helsinki are safe and frequent.

Solo and women travellers

Tallinn is comfortable for solo women, with low crime and an orderly, quiet atmosphere. Normal precautions apply in nightlife areas; Bolt rides are cheap for late returns.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. Ticks are present in forests and parks in the warm months, including in Lahemaa; use repellent. EU visitors should bring a European Health Insurance Card (UK visitors a GHIC); everyone should have travel insurance.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies.
