Is Symi safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Symi is extremely safe, with almost no crime. The realistic risks are heat on the steps of the Kali Strata, slippery stone stairs and paths, and sea or ferry disruptions in strong wind.
The real risks
Heat on the steps
The Kali Strata has about 500 steps and no shade; climb early and carry water.
Slippery stone
Polished steps and lanes are slippery when wet or dusty; wear shoes with grip.
Walking paths
Island paths to remote coves and chapels are rough and exposed; carry water and avoid the midday heat.
Boats and wind
Taxi boats and ferries may be cancelled in strong wind; keep a buffer before flights from Rhodes.
Harbour traffic
In summer, Gialos is busy with yachts and day boats; take care on the quay.
Wildfire risk
On hot, windy days, follow fire warnings and never light fires outdoors.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Gialos is lively in the evening; the lanes of Chorio and the paths are dark at night, so carry a torch.
Getting around safely
The minibus and taxi boats are safe and simple. Taxis are few, so arrange them in advance for early ferries. Ferries from Rhodes are reliable in calm weather.
Solo and women travellers
Symi is very comfortable for solo women, with a small, friendly community and very low crime. The main practical point is walking dark, steep lanes at night; carry a torch or use the minibus.
Health, water and heat
Many visitors drink bottled water. Heat and sun are the main summer risks, as the harbour's rock walls trap heat. Symi has a health centre; serious cases go to Rhodes, so travel insurance is important.
